January 2010 - Happy New Year!

Celebrate the New Year by making a tax-deductible gift to Abode Services and help vulnerable families gain the tools they need to make a fresh start.  This year we have provided supportive services to more than 2000 families, single adults and youth.

As we reflect on this year’s blessings, we are also mindful of the challenges. Charitable contributions are down. Yet despite today’s harsh economy, we were still able to provide over 25,000 bed nights and 76,000 meals through our shelter programs. We remain committed to providing help for the thousands who turn to us each year. But our essential programs and services can only be maintained with your continued support.

Your donation will be matched by the Sobrato Family Foundation who has provided us with a 2:1 Challenge Grant. This means any donation you make now can be matched dollar per dollar. Choose to maximize your donation by giving now.

Donations may be made on our website or by mail to our Abode Services, 40849 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94538. For further information about giving opportunities, please contact Carol Arata, Director of Development, at 510-657-7409 ext. 203 or email carata@abodeservices.org. Thank you for your support!

October, 2009: Winter Relief Program Needs Assistance

Preparations for the eighth year of the Winter Relief Emergency Shelter Program are currently underway. The program grew out of the needs of families who were on the waiting list for Sunrise Village Shelter. As the list grew to over 102 families in August 2001, community leaders met with Abode Services staff to discuss how to help those families get through the cold and wet winter months.

Winter Relief will provide six months (November 1-April 30) of temporary housing for up to 10 families with a maximum of 40 people at one time.

Funds are needed to purchase pillows; blankets; storage bins; towels; paper goods; cleaning supplies; arts and crafts supplies for children; vouchers for transportation; gift cards; diapers and baby care items and food.

Faith communities, clubs or individuals can support this effective program by contacting Carol Arata, Director of Development, at 510-657-7409 ext. 203 or emailing carata@abodeservices.org.

Supervisor Scott Haggerty Lends Support to the Community

For the 5th straight year, Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty purchased pigs at the Alameda County Fair Auction with the intention of donating the meat to homeless shelters in his district. Knowing homeless shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of staples including meat, Supervisor Haggerty purchased 2,610 lbs. of pork at the auction and personally delivered the meat to Abode Services in Fremont and Open Heart Kitchen in Pleasanton. Thank you, Supervisor Haggerty, for this very generous donation.
