Project Independence
Launched in 1998, Project Independence (PI) is a model program that enables former foster youth to make a safe and successful transition to adulthood. The PI Team assist youth to gain the skills to live independently by providing subsidized housing, combined with a network of supportive services, for a period of two years. This strategy is effective because it offers youth a stable foundation and adult support while they finish their education or job training, find employment, and address personal challenges that interfere with their ability to succeed on their own. Supportive services are provided in collaboration with other Bay Area agencies, and include case management, education and vocational training, employment placement, financial literacy training, life skills training, primary and mental healthcare, substance recovery programs, practical tenancy training, programs for pregnant and/or parenting youth, and connections to community resources.
